From November 25th to 30th, 2024, NBCLC Bengaluru served as a crucible for priestly formation, hosting the transformative Deacons' Course, "The Indian Church in the Synodal Context of India." This intensive program, designed to prepare 94 deacons for their transition to priesthood, provided a comprehensive and enriching experience.
The course was meticulously structured, focusing on key areas vital for effective pastoral ministry in the diverse Indian context.
• Exploring Diverse Catholic Traditions: The program began by illuminating the rich tapestry of Catholic traditions in India. Prominent figures like Mar Pauly Kannookadan and Bishop Geevarghese Mar Makarios led sessions focusing on the history, liturgy, and unique contributions of the Latin, Syro-Malabar, and Syro-Malankara Churches. This fostered a deep appreciation for the unity and diversity within the Indian Catholic Church.
• Addressing Contemporary Challenges: Recognizing the complexities of modern society, the course addressed contemporary challenges facing the Church. Experts like Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ explored the socio-political realities, while Fr. T.V. Thomas delved into the challenges facing religious life, and Fr. Anoop Joseph focused on the crucial area of youth ministry. Archbishop Peter Machado also provided invaluable insights into the relevance of pastoral ministry in a synodal context.
• Developing Pastoral Skills: Practical skills were emphasized, equipping deacons with the tools necessary for effective outreach. Dr. Mareena Mathew and Rt. Rev. Joseph Susaimanickam led sessions on strategic planning and experience sharing, ensuring participants could translate their knowledge into action.
• Experiencing Diverse Liturgies: The liturgical life of the Church was brought to life through daily Holy Mass celebrated in the various rites (Latin, Syro-Malabar, Syro-Malankara). This immersive experience, with celebrants including Fr. John Baptist (NBCLC Director), Rt. Rev. Arokia Raj Satis Kumar, Fr. Christopher Vimalraj, and Fr. Nysson Luka, provided a profound understanding of liturgical diversity.
• Engaging in Practical Learning: Beyond the classroom, participants engaged in practical learning experiences. Visits to local charities provided firsthand exposure to the Church's social mission. Team-building activities, led by Fr. Anoop Joseph CSsR, Dr. Nithin CSsR, Ms. Felsy, and Ms. Betsy, fostered collaboration and strengthened bonds among the deacons.
This Deacons' Course successfully achieved its aim of preparing deacons for priesthood by providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the Indian Church, contemporary challenges, and practical pastoral skills. The program's emphasis on liturgical diversity, social engagement, and synodal collaboration equipped these future priests to serve their communities with wisdom, compassion, and dedication.
