Harmonizing Faith and Art: NBCLC's Certificate Programme in Church Music Elevates Liturgical Expression

November 11th to 20th, 2024

From November 11th to 20th, 2024, NBCLC Bengaluru resonated with the sounds of musical exploration and liturgical enrichment, hosting a comprehensive Certificate Programme in Church Music. This program, designed to equip individuals from various dioceses with the skills and knowledge necessary to enhance their musical contributions to the Church, was expertly led by Rev. Dr. Fr. Joseph Jayasheelan.

The program was meticulously structured, encompassing four distinct units that provided a holistic understanding of church music.

• General Introduction to Music: This foundational unit laid the groundwork for musical understanding, covering the basics of Western and Indian music, including notation, and providing hands-on experience with practical keyboard sessions. This ensured that all participants, regardless of their prior musical experience, could build a solid foundation.

• Church Music in India: This unit delved into the rich tapestry of liturgical and devotional music traditions within the Indian context. Participants explored Vatican, CBCI, and CCBI guidelines, traced historical developments, and examined the impact of media on church music, providing a nuanced understanding of the evolving landscape.

• Creative Music: This unit fostered creativity and innovation, emphasizing the composition of hymns, Mass parts, and devotional songs. Participants engaged in analysis of existing compositions and were challenged to create original songs, nurturing their artistic expression.

• Vocal and Instrumental Music: This practical unit addressed the essential elements of choir formation, voice care, and sound systems. Participants underwent talent tests and engaged in practical sessions, ensuring they gained the skills necessary to lead and enhance musical performance.

The program's overarching aim was to provide comprehensive training in church music, empowering participants to elevate liturgical expression and enrich the spiritual experience of their communities. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical application, the program equipped participants with the tools and confidence to contribute meaningfully to the musical life of the Church. This Certificate Programme was a resounding success, fostering a deeper appreciation for the power of music in worship and empowering participants to become skilled and dedicated liturgical musicians.
