Introduction:
The three-day APCA Leadership Training Program, held in collaboration with the National
Biblical, Catechetical, and Liturgical Centre (NBCLC), Bangalore, marked a significant
milestone in empowering local church leaders and catechists. This transformative event was
attended by approximately 80 dedicated participants, including Executive Members of
Central APCA, Diocesan Units, Deanery Leaders, and Catechists of Papum Pare District,
particularly from the Capital Region.
Program Overview:
Day 1 (20 February):
The event commenced at 3:00 pm with the participants' arrival, followed by refreshment and
a solemn inaugural Mass led by Most Rev. Benny Varghese, Bishop of Itanagar. In his
inspiring homily, Bishop Varghese emphasized becoming credible witnesses of the Risen
Lord by embodying Christ's teachings—living lives filled with compassion, forgiveness, and
authentic witness, effectively sharing the Good News through words and actions. He called
upon participants to radiate joy, especially during life's trials, emphasizing faith shown
through service to marginalized communities.
Following the Mass, the introductory session was delivered by Rev. Fr. Nysson Luka,
Assistant Director at NBCLC Bangalore, who set the tone by highlighting the program's
objectives and its importance in contemporary faith leadership. The day concluded with a
reflective movie screening, "Face of the Faceless," alongside the recitation of the Rosary,
fostering spiritual introspection and unity among participants.
Day 2 (21 February):
The second day began with a spiritually enriching Mass presided over by Rev. Fr. Jacob
Mattathilany, Vicar General of the Diocese. Fr. Mattathilany, in his address, strongly
advocated for servant leadership, urging participants to embody humility and inclusiveness,
prioritizing community service over personal authority. He called for collaborative decision-
making, ensuring every community member's voice is valued and respected.
The day's educational sessions included profound insights from distinguished speakers. Rev.
Dr. Fr. Benny Nediyamalayil, OSMdL, a Professor at Rajeev Gandhi University, delivered an
insightful lecture on "Prophetic Leadership: Catholic Leaders to be Signs of the Time,"
highlighting the importance of discernment and timely actions guided by faith. Rev. Dr. Fr.
Jose Thomas SDB, Councillor and Faculty at Don Bosco College, explored "Leadership
Characters in the Bible," offering a nuanced understanding of biblical leaders and their
relevance today.
In the afternoon session, Rev. Fr. Boniface Dhanwar, Director of the Catechetical
Commission, Diocese of Itanagar, elucidated the essence of catechesis, emphasizing its
crucial role in shaping a vibrant Christian community. The evening provided opportunities for
fellowship and spiritual growth through a movie screening and collective Rosary recitation.
Day 3 (22 February):
The concluding day featured Mass led by Rev. Fr. Boniface Dhanwar, reinforcing the
centrality of the Eucharist in leadership. Rev. Dr. Fr. John Pudussery SDB, Parish Priest at
Infant Jesus Catholic Church Doimukh, addressed "Leadership Modelled on Christ,"
emphasizing Christlike leadership characterized by selflessness, empathy, and genuine care
for others.
Subsequent catechetical sessions led by Fr. Boniface Dhanwar further deepened participants'
understanding and commitment to faith education. The training culminated with a dynamic
valedictory session, which included an engaging question-and-answer period, allowing
participants to clarify doubts and consolidate their learning.
Conclusion:
This comprehensive Leadership Training Program significantly impacted attendees,
equipping them with vital insights and renewed dedication to their faith communities. The
blend of spiritual nourishment, theological enrichment, and practical leadership skills
highlighted during these three days promises to foster transformative servant leaders who
exemplify Christ's compassion, humility, and unwavering commitment to serving others.
The collaborative efforts between APCA and NBCLC have indeed laid a robust foundation
for ongoing leadership development within the Diocese of Itanagar, ensuring faith
communities flourish with leaders deeply rooted in gospel values and empowered to navigate
contemporary challenges effectively.
